The History of Internet Memes

An internet meme is a idea, activity, catchphrase, or form of media that is spread from person to person via the internet. Internet memes are often humorous in nature or used as a form of imitation. They can been spread in many different media formats such as images and videos. Internet memes are a subset of Richard Dawkins' term "meme", which is used to describe how trends and cultural ideas are spread. The format of internet memes we will be focusing on are called "image macros". These feature a still photo with text superimposed on top of it. 2  Memes have become so massively widespread that according to Google Trends, the word "meme" has been searched more than the word Jesus. 3

Internet memes using the same concept or image will have a shared title for which they are known by.

We will be using the following memes (click on title to go to page):

Story Time Jesus

Advice God

Buddy Christ

Jesus is a Jerk

To understand memes further, we must understand how they are communicational. They are important devices used in the mediatization of society. The production of memes can be very discursive. This is how memes can be used in both media fields and religious fields.

We can quantify the popularity of a meme through "likes", "shares", and "clicks".
